‘Sport has the power to change the world. It has the power to inspire. It has the power to unite people in a way that little else does.’ - Nelson Mandela

At St Bernadette’s, we believe that the sport and Physical Education is critical in ensuring that out children are physically and mentally healthy. This enables children to become successful learners, confident individuals and responsible citizens. Values developed through P.E, such as teamwork, determination, respect, honesty, passion and self-belief are transferable to many areas of our children lives and reflect our school’s Catholic ethos.

We recognise that P.E, physical activity and sport make an extensive contribution towards aspect of pupils’ social, moral, spiritual and cultural development. Therefore, we firmly believe that all pupils deserve the opportunity to enjoy sport, regardless of their ability. By devoting time and attention to those who are less confident, we develop life skills that bring resilience and success beyond school life.

‘Winning isn’t everything but wanting to win is.’ - Vince Lombardi

Providing a range of opportunities for competitive sport across all areas and inclusive of all abilities is another central vision of P.E. at St Bernadette’s. Our children understand that winning is important but that the enjoyment of competitive sport and knowing they have tried their best are equally valuable. Competitive sports provide our children the opportunity to win modestly and loose gracefully as the opportunity to win brings with it equal measures the risk of defeat. It is the lessons and values learnt through these experiences that will shape the lives of our children, a life that will undoubtedly provide them with setbacks and challenges. Every child has the right to compete and learn from the experiences of winning and losing.

We also provide a range of opportunities to ensure that children know and understand how to maintain a healthy, active lifestyle. Including being physically active as well as learning about mental health. This provides the foundations for a lifelong passion to care about one’s health.
