Modern Foreign Languages
“One language sets you in a corridor for life. Two languages open every door along the way.” ― Frank Smith, psycholinguist.
We develop successful learners who gain experiences with other languages and cultures.
Our vision for Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) is to teach French to all our children in KS1 and KS2 , in a fun and interactive way as part of an outstanding learning experience.
Our aim is to ensure that all children make good progress through engagement and inspiration. We encourage the children to develop skills and apply these in a variety of ways using authentic materials and a kinaesthetic approach to learning. We encourage our children to become global citizens with an awareness of other cultures and languages; this is highlighted in our International Week in September where every class studies a country and learns about its culture and Year 5 have the opportunity to visit Normandy, where pupils can learn about the geography, history and food as well as using French in everyday situations such as the market.
At the end of their journey through primary school, children will have been exposed to the building blocks necessary to form their own sentences in French in the four skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking. Children have opportunities to share their learning in a variety of ways, such as assemblies and celebration days ensuring that they leave St Bernadette’s as responsible, happy citizens with an understanding of French and its culture.
