COLLECTIVE WORSHIP
Prayer, worship and liturgical celebration
Prayer, worship and liturgical celebration are central to our Catholic tradition and form an integral part of our school day. Prayer is encouraged in a variety of methods; whole school prayer, group prayer and private individual prayer.
Children take part in a daily act of worship and formal prayers are used to start and end the school day and also at lunchtimes. Older children plan and lead acts of worship within their classes as part of their collective worship. In each class there is a collective worship book where pictures, planning templates and children's responses are kept as a reminder and record of the acts of worship.
Children take part in key stage liturgies which are usually centred around global issues, British and Catholic values.
We also recognise and celebrate children's achievements, both in and out of school, during our weekly Well Done Celebration.
Our Worship Area
Each child has access to a prayer area in the classroom, which includes a prayer focus and collective worship book, along with Bibles and resources relevant to each class.
We have a wonderful prayer garden in our lower playground. Children enjoy spending time in this quiet space during break and lunchtimes. They can spend time to sit and reflect and use their prayer stones.
We also have a worship area near our library within school. Children enjoy accessing this quiet space during various times of the day. They can sit and write prayers, write or read the messages on the Prayer Board or just sit and reflect.
Prayer
Prayer is an integral part of our shared faith, and together we have created a culture of prayer for our school community.
At St Mary Magdalen's we pray daily in a variety of ways. Our timetable shows the opportunities we have for daily prayer and they different types of prayer that we take part in.
Adoration: This is a prayer where we tell God how much we love and honour Him. It's like saying "I love you" to God because He is so wonderful and good.
Meditation: Meditation is when we sit quietly and think about God. It's like spending quiet time with Him and letting our hearts listen to what He might want to say to us.
Lectio Divina: This is a special way of praying with the Bible. We read a Bible story or passage slowly, think about it, and talk to God about it. It helps us understand what God is saying through the Bible.
Visio Divina: In this prayer, we look at a picture, a painting, or something beautiful that reminds us of God. We spend time looking at it and thinking about how it makes us feel closer to God.
The Rosary: The Rosary is a special set of prayers using beads. Each bead helps us remember to pray certain prayers, like the "Hail Mary" and "Our Father," and to think about the important times in Jesus' and Mary's lives.
Spontaneous Prayer: This is when we talk to God in our own words, just like we talk to a friend. We can say whatever is on our minds - like thanking God, asking for help, or telling Him how we feel.
We gather, using prayers or actions or music. Then, we listen to scripture, readings and / or poems. After that, we respond by doing something or saying a prayer together. Finally, we go forth by reflecting on the scripture and taking this forward into our work throughout the day.
It is wonderful to see the children excited, enthusiastic and deepening their faith through prayer and liturgy.
In each class, there is a prayer and liturgy book where pictures, planning templates and PowerPoints are kept as a reminder and record of the acts of worship.
We also recognise and celebrate children's achievements, both in and out of school, during our weekly Celebration Assembly.
Amazing things can happen when people come into agreement.
Matthew 18:19 says: "I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything you ask for, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven."
Prayer Bags
Each week a child takes home their class prayer bag. The class prayer bag is to help children to develop their own independent prayer. They can also use these prayer bags to pray with other members of their family. We are very thankful to one of our parishioners who made our beautiful prayer bags for each of our classes.
Personal Prayers
The children and staff will be delighted to pray for you or a loved one.
As soon as we receive your request, the children and staff will keep your request in our hearts and minds as we pray throughout the day and week - please find a prayer slip in our school's front entrance.
MORNING PRAYER
Father in heaven, you love me,
You're with me night and day.
I want to love you always
In all I do and say.
I'll try to please you, Father.
Bless me through the day.
Amen.
GRACE BEFORE MEALS
Bless us, O Lord, as we sit together,
Bless the food we eat today.
Bless the hands that make the food.
Bless us, O Lord.
Amen.
END OF THE DAY PRAYER
God our Father, we come to say
Thank you for your love today.
Thank you for my family,
And all the friends you give to me.
Guard me in the dark of night,
And in the morning send your light.
Amen.
