Welcome

St Mary Magdalen’s is a Catholic, Voluntary Aided Primary School with a Nursery. We are situated in the centre of Brighton, very close to the main shopping thoroughfare of Western Road.

We are a small, vibrant, close and happy school with a safe, caring and inclusive environment where all of the children and staff know one another. Our school has a wonderfully dedicated team of staff that provide outstanding quality of care and work incredibly hard to teach to exceptionally high standards in everything that we do.

The main building dates from 1968 – we have a nursery class and seven other classes which range from Reception to Year 6.

We have three different playgrounds and a small environmental area, but no playing fields of our own. We have a large, airy, multi-purpose hall and recent extensions have added additional learning areas, an extra classroom and a smaller room, which is used for specialist group teaching or counselling.

Children at St Mary Magdalen’s come from a wide range of backgrounds; we are a Catholic school but welcome a number of children from different faiths and religions.

We teach the children to respect and value differences, recognising that each person is created in God’s image and, as such, is unique and special.

Our Mission Statement is at the heart of our core values and ethos.  We are an inclusive school guided by Gospel Values in ensuring that all pupils have equal access and opportunities for learning.  Our vision is a school where every child achieves through a relentless focus on high quality teaching and learning.  Ensuring all children make good or better progress in reading, writing and numeracy is one of our core purposes.  Our staff always use the most effective methods for teaching these basic skills.

Underpinning this will be:

  • outstanding day-to-day assessment and marking of children’s work
  • first rate systems for tracking, identifying and celebrating children’s progress
  • an exciting, relevant and inspiring curriculum
  • excellent support for the needs of each child

Classrooms are vibrant, supportive and welcoming.  They are full of children motivated by positive, well-paced and purposeful lessons delivered by staff that are passionate about the children’s success.  Every parent & carer is able to feel proud of their child’s achievements and know exactly what these are.  Clear guidance is given about the best ways to support children with learning out of school.  Every child is given the best possible start in their education.  We ensure that children have a strong pupil voice in every aspect of school life.

We work in partnership with parents & carers and very much value the support and contribution they make to our school life. Our families play a crucial role in maintaining the relationship between parish, home and school.
