Why do we teach swimming?

No one can deny that learning to swim could potentially save your own or someone's life one day!

The National Curriculum of 2014 is very open in what what we teach children in PE, compared with the old curriculum HOWEVER swimming and water safety is given increased importance. It sates that...

All schools must provide swimming instruction either in key stage 1 or key stage 2. In particular, pupils should be taught to:
  • swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25metres
  • use a range of strokes effectively [for example, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke]
  • perform safe self rescue in different water based situations.
